Why you are experiencing more hair loss right now as it gets colder?!

Why you're experiencing more hair loss, especially now that it's getting colder?

Do you feel like you're losing more hair now that it's getting colder outside? That may be true, because in autumn you generally lose two or sometimes even three times more hair than in summer. There's an (innocent) reason for this.

Twice a year you experience more hair loss: in autumn and in spring. Just before it gets really cold the feast begins: at the end of summer you already lose a little more hair than usual. In October, hair loss increases dramatically; in general, hair loss is highest in that month.

Causes of hair loss in cold weather

Why is it that hair loss increases when the weather gets colder? It has to do with the small blood vessels that contract when it's cold and that affects your hair's growth cycle: you get more hair loss. That growth cycle has several phases. First there is the growth phase, then the resting phase and finally the shedding phase.

In the summer, your hair grows faster than in other seasons. You also suffer less hair loss in the summer because your body needs the hair to protect you from the sun. In summer, ninety percent of hair is in the growth phase and ten percent is in the shedding phase. When it gets colder, the percentage of hair falling out increases. So it is not surprising if you suddenly find more hairs in your comb or shower drain now.

Tips for hair loss

You can't influence the weather, of course, but you can take good care of your hair in the fall so that the "damage" is minimized as much as possible. Here's how to do it:

·Eat healthy food: with hair loss, eat lots of lentils and egg. They contain protein, vitamin B, iron and zinc. You can also get protein with soy, beans, meat and cheese. Vitamin B and magnesium can be obtained by eating lots of vegetables, fish, bananas and avocados.
·Don't brush your hair too hard, or it will fall out faster.
·Do not use a hair dryer (or as little as possible). Other devices for your hair that give off heat are also best avoided if you want to reduce hair loss.
·Avoid stress. You probably know that stress is not good for you, but it also has a negative effect on your hair. Try relaxing through yoga or meditation.
·Take a hair mask. This will nourish your hair and make it shine.
·Wear a hat when it is cold outside. That way you protect your hair from the cold and dry air. They will be less likely to break off.
·Try taking lukewarm showers, which is much better for your hair. Very hot water can damage your hair and scalp and dry them out considerably. If you want your hair to shine substantially, you can rinse your hair with cold water after you wash it.
